Wormriddle
Once Regent and Imp argued about who was the better rider. Bitch was not against letting the dogs stretch their legs and designated an old water tower as a landmark to which the riders should get and return.
Tumblr media
The dogs crouched down like coiled springs, Regent and Imp stood nearby, ready to mount them and ride on command, but then Tattletale suggested making the task a little more interesting: the winner would be the one whose dog came in last, not first. At the same time, no superpower could be used (this rule is for everyone, except Rachel: the dogs retain their altered appearance). This new condition made the previously cheerfully grinning couple look at each other in thought and scratch their heads.
The delay would have lasted much longer if Skitter had not muttered a few words, after which the competitors jumped on the dogs and raced towards the tower.
What solution was proposed to comply with Tattletale's condition?

AU where Dumbledore is all like: I should have known Tom was evil. His mother date raped his father and that was how he was born. He doesn't understand love and never will.
NOPE! He's just an autistic child who grew up in an abusive environment during the Depression and World War II and developed an antisocial personality disorder as a result!
Dumbledore: You shouldn't steal. Stealing is bad.
Little Tom: But why?
Dumbledore: Stealing is wrong.
Little Tom, frustrated: But why???
Orion, trying to explain how a spell works: You just have to feel it.
Tom, deadpan: I beg your finest pardon?
Dumbledore: How well can you empathize, Tom?
Tom, who mentally cannot put himself "in other people's shoes": That's a made up word.
Dumbledore: Tom seems too good at masking his true nature around others. I am the only one who sees him for what he is.
Tom, almost vibrating with overstimulation: If someone gets into my personal space without permission again, I will stab them in the eye.
Voldemort: Step aside, silly girl.
Lily Potter: Please, not Harry!
Voldemort, who had a plan:...
Voldemort, internally: Crap. Now what am I supposed to do?

"Riddles" (S06E7, Stardate 53263.2) is a different route to explore a Vulcan who has lost his logic. The relationship between Tuvok and Neelix is explored from a fresh angle, allowing Neelix to get the connection he has longed for, and we get a one-off alien with a lot of promise we will never see again.
What better way to show a crumbling Tuvok than going symbolic with my episode poster?

Another question for the Skulduggery Pleasant fandom, because I've just finished reading the Haunted House on Hollow Hill, and I feel like I'm missing something.
Below the cut 'cause this is, y'know, a murder mystery
Do we get two explanations for how the police officer (Dudley) dies? First is that Grody killed him (and is used as an alibi for Grody & how there is more than one killer abroad) and the other is that Terry did it (and he openly admits it) - the second option is clearly the correct one, given the confession, but it just felt odd that there's not even a nod back to the first red herring.
#skulduggery pleasant#the haunted house on hollow hill#i enjoyed the book a lot! chuckled a lot#but#but but but it feels... still a lil rough?#like it could have gone through another round of editing to smooth it out#i did enjoy the clear riffing on the murder mystery genre (my beloved)#and the constable climbing back in through a window feels like a reference to the mousetrap play#but what the hell was with the 'dont you think its a waste when pretty people die' bit#like. i feel like maybe that was meant to be foreshadowing?? a very shaky maybe#but i feel like there should have been a reference back to it#and derek is doing his usual trick of inventing new magic mechanics we've never seen before#but thats par for the course so i cant be surprised#same with skullduggery's over complicated puzzle solving that are like#'ah yes this clue relies on such obscure knowledge and loose conjecture that none of this is logical anymore'#and sure. in a prev book this does get called out#and yet [gestures to this book]#look. i like riddles as much as the next person#but the sharp riddle barely made sense even when the answer was revealled#like. maaaaybe this was riffing on the overly complicated clues you get in murder mysteries?#but then that would really be leaning more on the sherlockian deduction trope#insane how many people leave full on escape room style puzzles just lying around in the SP universe#anyway. rambles over. feel free to shout at me why im wrong#but like i said this story just felt. rough.#i do think he has improved over the years#his descriptions are smoother than they used to be and more evocative#and the humour is still top notch

Saying Stephanie Brown has no notable skills except for sheer determination is actually pretty canonically inaccurate-
I swear one of these days I'm gonna make a whole fucking post full of her skillset- Just because she doesn't have a traditional skillset doesn't mean she's has no skills 😭

I think I found some interesting fun mathematical problem, and I could not find any literature on it.
Ok so I was thinking about the two guards riddle where one always tells the truth (guard T) and the other always lies (guard F). These guards protect a crossroads where one road is correct and lets you live and the other leads to death (or at least, wasted time). The worst part: you only have one yes-no question to ask.
The (or at least a) correct answer to this riddle is no doubt familiar with several of you: Ask one guard "If I asked which road leads to freedom to the other guard, what would he say?". This works as follows:
- Asking this question to T will lead to them saying the wrong road, as that is what F would say.
- Asking this question to F will lead them to lie about the correct road T would point to, saying the wrong road.
In either case you get the wrong road, so you simply pick the other option.
Now here is where it gets interesting, how can we generalize this problem? One way to do this is to increase the number of guards as follows:
Suppose we have k guards, with n truth-guards T and m false-guards F (n,m > 0 unknown) guarding two roads. Can we find the correct road with one yes-no question?
The main trick employed in the 2-guard problem cannot be used as it relies on there being exactly one guard of each type. However, if you ask two random guards there is now a possibility they are a TT or FF pair, in which case they will point to the right road instead.
I tried finding some kind of nested question ("if I ask the guard on your right: if I ask the guard on your right what road leads to freedom") but couldn't quite put my finger a good question to ask. Another promising method would be to incorporate some kind of boolean operators (such as AND and OR) to make a perfect question, however this turned out to be hard to do for arbitrary k.
I would love the input of anyone reading this who found textwall this interesting!

tbh I think Gotham Ed would’ve worked better if the writers portrayed him as more so driven by proving that he’s smart than driven by a actual search for knowledge deep down. I know i know a lot of riddlers are that but he just. Doesn’t read like that to me??????????? This isn’t me saying the writers shouldn’t make him smart, but if your going to write him count as insane then incorporate the need to fucking prove how smart he is when he’s doing that shit?????? Why are you making him do illogical actions that don’t tie into that like yeah you don’t have to make it make sense logical he is insane when he gets into those moods BUT OH MY GOD KEEP HIS LOGIC CONSISTENT GUYS
I feel like if they were consistent about him needing to prove he’s smart and justifying irrational behaviour by some bullshit he’s convincing himself he’s doing then his relationships with others romantically or whatever would make more sense too. Why is the man who thinks love is a weakness not bothered deep down by how intimidate he’s getting???? Show that to me Gotham MAKE HIM GIVE A HALF ASSED PSEUDO LOGICAL REASON FOR DATING ISABELLA MAKE HIM START OUT BEING MENTALLY SOUND IN SEASON THREE DUE TO BEING ON MEDS AND SLOWLY BUT SURELY LOSE IT AND BECOME MORE INSECURE BECAUSE OF HOW OTHERS VIEW HIM!!!!!!!! GOTHAM WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS TO ME
It’s not even like the writers never made him ever do insane shit and then try to rationalize and make it logical. He literally thought Jim knew he killed Kristen and planned out a fucking eloberate plot to frame Jim WHICH RATTED HIMSELF OUT FROM HIS ATTEMPTS TO PROVE HOW SMART HE IS GOTHAM IS CAPABLE OF WRITING EDWARD BEING SO SCARED OF BEING WEAK AND DUMB HE DOES STUPID SHIT I DONT GET WHY THEYRE SO INCONSISTENT WITH THIS OUGHHHH MENTALLY UNWELL PEOPLE DONT DO RANDOM SHIT JUST BECAUSE THEY HAVE A INTERNAL LOGIC TO THEIR ACTIONS EVEN IF ITS FLAWS GOTHAM STOP DOING THIS TO MEEEEEE

What if TWST has a game franchise similar to LOZ, but it's Alice's adventures in Wonderland?
The series is quite popular, you play as Alice, with the Cheshire Cat as your companion (who tends to cause more problems than help out), the Vorpal Sword is basically the Master Sword and you help the Queen of Hearts by exploring dungeons and solving riddles and puzzles. There is even an Ace Attorney spin-off (not very successful, since the nonsensical rules annoy most players).
However, it's a general consensus that no one understands the first game. The whole playthrough amounts to 2 hours at most, though dataminers found more content in the code. It that wasn't enough, there is a weird sign right next to the first dungeon, who clearly breaks the fourth wall:
*
WARNING! YOUR GAME WILL NEVER BE THE SAME IF YOU DON'T GET THIS MESSAGE!
"Up is down, left is right,
Count the letters, subtract the spaces,
1 2 3 know 9 8 7 are your friends, now and ever,
Mind the gaps, ignore the rabbit,
There is no fun that is not maddening!"
There is also a small note in the back, written in blood-red ink, signed with a paw-print:
"I watch everything with a disinterested smirk,
With lazy eyes that twinkle like faraway suns,
You'll never find me in the night sky while I lurk,
'Cause, "mime a ton, drum te hey!"
*
Now, the Cheshire cat was only introduced in a later game, so people kept trying to find glitches to the moon (they also didn't find the cat and kept talking to a mime NPC). A quick look at the Queen's Rules also didn't help, since the number you get when subtracting the letters and spaces while ignoring the numbers just doesn't add up (something about doing parkour whenever a tree is planted).
So it stayed that way, just like the "Mew under the truck" thing.
Until Cater decided to stream a playthrough alongside the dorm (it fits the Heartslabyul theme, also Riddle is interested in gaming, so why not start with a simpler game that is also a classic).
You see, firstly, if you consider the numbers as actual names and write them as words, you get additional letters that, when subtracted by the spaces...still get a rule that doesn't make sense (don't eat a tart after midnight) BUT, if you know about Queendom history, you'll know that this rule was added by the White Rabbit to fill a GAP in the book after the Queen banned a rule about the correct way to dance (up, down, left, right, two steps forward, one step back).
Long story short, Riddle solved the problem.
So, you can get that dance and replicate it in the game, swapping up with down and left with right (forward and backwards would also be up and down, in this case).
As for the extra note, they already knew it was the cat, but if you scramble "Mime a ton, drum te hey!", you get "I am on the tree, dummy!"
The cat introduced himself, saying he'll follow the player on the next journey, but not before giving a tip: "If you want to keep going, you have to be as mad as everyone here! Why kill when you can dance? They do say singing wards off evil..."
Riddle explained all of this in fifteen minutes. Just to humor him, Cater left the sign and made a beeline for the first tree in the area, expecting nothing of it.
The Cheshire Cat showed up, his smile overtaking the screen.
And with that, Cater wordlessly rushed to the first dungeon, doing the dance code instead of killing the first enemy.
The game crashed.
And then a cutscene started playing.
It was basically the Jabberwock appearing and destroying the dungeon's ceiling. Apparently he is "searching for that damn cat" and "hoping to battle his nemesis again". With that, he leaps to the sky, and we get the game's title drop.
Do note that the game was using a style similar to "A Link to the Past" at first, but everything changed and now it looks like Twilight Princess.
And that's how Cater's streams became famous. Also everyone is trying to memorize the Queen's rules.
The streams now happen in Ramshackle, with the entire cast present. Also Riddle is annoyed because people keep asking for his assistance with solving game puzzles.
Alternatively, this could also happen in Book 6.
Everyone speedrunnimg the Overblot fight just so they can keep playing.

i think i did it. i found an alternate solution to the 2 doors 2 guards riddle.
first, you point at the guard you want to ask your question to with one hand and at one of the doors with your other hand. then you ask, “am i pointing at you, or the correct door?”
the liar will either say “the correct door” or “neither”
the truth teller will either say “both” or “me”
